With Walt Whitman in Camden (March 28--July 14, 1888)

New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1915. Cloth Hardcover. Good with no dust jacket / No Dustjacket. Item #076941

Clean pages except for a gift inscription (1919) on the front free endpaper and some foxing at endpapers and page block edges, saving the dimmed but intact gilded head edge; all tipped-in plates present and well-kept except for two small, closed edge tears on the facsimile of Whitman's last will and a detachment with evident edge trimming of the plate that had been tipped in opposite page 276 (the image remains intact, laid in). The somewhat shaken binding is showing net at the front hinge, but remains sound. The full cloth cover shows darkening, including dimming of the gilt, along the spine; pale patches of surface wear around heel edges, with one small spot of color loss each at front and rear; significant corner wear, with board showing and loose threads at all four free corners and both spine ends, and a small surface tear exposing board at the upper right front; yet remains otherwise sturdy. xiv, 473, [ii]pp. For some reason the image that most captures me, Matthew Brady photographs notwithstanding, is the facsimile of a letter to Whitman from Alfred, Lord Tennyson, opening with the lines: "Dear old man, I the elder old man have received your Article..."
