Undated; most likely printed between 1874-1886. This book bears noticeable repair at spine and hinges, but the pages are clean saving some pencil marks on the reverse of the front free endpaper; the sewn binding is secure, though the preliminaries are fragile at the bound edges and appear to have been glued along the bound edge of the title page; the full cloth cover retains the publisher's original boards and the printed and inked portion of the backstrip affixed over a new spine (in closely matching blue cloth); the usual darkening of the spine panel, some inky smudges on the rear and a pale droplet mark at the right rear, and gentle overall wear, otherwise sound. x, [13]-226pp. + 48pp. publisher's catalog (Chatto & Windus; dated May 1874). Though the text is much beloved and much reprinted, this is an early edition with attractive design.
