This deck features symbolic imagery (animals, plants, landscapes, weapons) with no human figures; it also works rune divination into each card’s visual arrangement. Each card centers on a triangle that frames a colorful natural scene (e.g. the Star card depicts the Northern Lights), and lines extend down from the triangle frame with symbols that are evocative of rune staves. The title “Elemental North” refers to the alchemical scheme of each card, since the upside-down or rightside-up framing triangles, with or without a horizontal crossing line, form the alchemical symbols of the 4 elements (fire, earth, air, water) associated with each particular suit (Wands, Pentacles, Swords, Cups). Elemental correspondences are furthermore assigned to the Major Arcana. The imagery of the scenes depicted on each card is inspired by the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition but reinterpreted with North-American flora and fauna (and sometimes folklore, since Queen of Pentacles features a jackalope), along with occasional Viking shields that suggest early Norse presence on the continent.
