Vandover and the Bruce

Doubleday, Page & Company, 1914. First Edition. Hardcover. Good with no dust jacket / No Dustjacket. Item #072924

Crisp, clean pages except for mild age-toning throughout and some dust staining on the head edge; square, somewhat relaxed, but secure binding; full raw sienna cloth cover bears just a few faint spots at the lower right front and has inward turns at the bottom free corners, a light bump at the top left rear, modest dimming along the spine, small cloth wrinkles at spine ends, and spots of rubbing at spine ends and corners, otherwise sound and attractive. 354pp. This book, unpublished in the author's lifetime, survived despite the near-total burning of the author's estate, and in fact a mote of doubt remains as to the true authorship because of the theft of the manuscript's title page (which, if genuine, would have borne the author's signature). Sounds too improbable to be fiction! Regardless of the novel's authentication, though, it demands greater study: realistic characters, socioeconomic and granularized-culture complexities, unconventional sexualities, racial intersections - this is Norris' "Maurice", sixty years before anyone had the nerve to print that.
