Memoirs of the Court of Charles I

London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman, 1833. Second Edition. Calfskin. Good. Item #072225

Pages clean except for a prior owner's bookplates on the front endpapers of each volume, gentle toning in the margins, and some reciprocal toning opposite densely printed areas; both volumes' bindings are square and secure, the full leather showing surface wear along both spine panels and the loss of tooled panels bearing the author's name (though the impression of the letters remains visible, and the gold leaf title and decoration between the raised bands remain mostly intact, if somewhat dimmed), as well as some loss of the title panel on the first volume, thin scrapes through the finish on the front board of the second volume, some dark brown blooms of spotting on the rear board of the first volume, and wear at corners and heel edges of both volumes; nonetheless attractive and remarkably sound for contemporary binding; the tanning yielded a rich gold hue, rimmed with gold leaf on both boards, endpapers and page block edges marbled including a particularly striking blue. The second Stuart king's legendary profligacy isn't left out, but this work definitely hangs the lighting for a final spot on the treason case that eclipsed the divine right of kings. Caveat fautor! XV, 544; XV, 611pp. inc. index.; 8vo.
