Pages crisp and clean except for some foxing at the endpapers, a few little corner folds, separation along the foreedges of two of the Japanese-style leaves, and modest age-toning; binding, secured with patterned strips of leather tied at the front, remains square and secure; full silk hard cover shows fabric fraying and spots of material loss along the bound edges of both boards and beginning to show at the ends of the joints, the cloth at the spine is faded, there are a few short scratches and a line of reddish staining near the middle rear, and the edges and corners of the boards are worn, the cloth worn through in some places, yet the pattern front and back remains rich and vibrant, the silk soft. 81pp. A survey of the history of Japanese pictorial arts, described chronologically and by school, with several black-and-white collotypes, including some two-page fold-outs.
