Item #064996 Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Union Counties, Iowa

Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Union Counties, Iowa

Chicago: The Lewis Publishing Company, 1887. Hardcover. Good with no dust jacket / No Dustjacket. Item #064996

Pages crisp and clean except for a water stain affecting the bottom edges and lower right corners of the page block edges, bleeding through into margins only on plate pages, though modestly toned throughout; no owners' marks; binding is square and tight. Original boards are full leather and show surface wear front and back, with wear through the leather at the free corners and in spots along the board edges, but with bright, fresh-looking gilt titles on the front; rebacked with black cloth and a pastedown title plate, showing only light rubbing at the spine ends; original endpapers remain but have been reinforced with white cloth tape. All page edges gilded; both boards blindstamped and interior-bordered in gilt; 737pp.; as with most Lewis publications, the first part of the book (224pp) is given over to the broader histories of nation and state; there are then 172pp. brief biographies with accompanying portraits of Ringgold County citizens, 64pp. history of the county, townships, and towns, 288pp. biographies and portraits of Union County citizens, and 85pp. history of Union County. Not as pretty as the Chapman Brothers county books - the paper isn't as fine, hence the tanning around the edges - but this is a solidly bound, detailed history of two of Iowa's underappreciated southern counties, soon to be a sesquicentennial piece of history in its own right.
