First edition, limited to 2000 copies, of which this is stamped #39. Signed, dated, and inscribed to a named individual by the author at the front free endpaper, with very feline affection (June 3, 1957). Clean pages barring mild toning throughout; no owners' marks; binding is rather relaxed, shaken and starting at both hinges, but otherwise secure; the cloth spine is somewhat dimmed and shows softening and short lines of fraying at the ends but is otherwise clean and intact; the boards show considerable rubbing and chipping around the edges, scattered surface chips and rub marks front and back and some faint discoloration around the edges, and two shallow, open edge tears in the blue paper at the front head edge; the gilt decoration on the front and motto on the back remain bright and clear; overall, worn but still attractive and sound. Illustrated; 367pp. w/index. Carl Van Vechten was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1880; in the 1930s, he was a noted portrait photographer, focusing on artists, actors, and writers; he maintained a correspondence with Gertrude Stein from 1913 until her death, and Van Vechten was named her literary executor.
