Clean except for light foxing on the title pages; no owners' marks; the full red cloth cover has two short scuffs and some dimming along the spine, light surface wear at spine ends and joints, a faint brown spot at the lower front, and some corner wear, otherwise well-kept and sound. x, 433pp.; as with most first printings of this book, the index is absent. John A. Kasson came to Iowa from Charlotte, Virgina, already an accomplished lawyer, and in 1860, he was a delegate to the convention that selected Lincoln as the Republican Party's candidate for President. Under Lincoln, Kasson served as First Assistant Postmaster General and played a prominent role in US diplomacy. He died in 1910.
