Pages clean except for some foxing to preliminaries and edges and prior owners' names at the front endpaper and first leaf (Shadrack Tipton of Baltimore County, Maryland), as well as heavy foxing to the tissue guard between the portraits of Washington and Lincoln preceding the title page. The binding is square and secure, though with splits at the hinges; the cover bears a 2" scar at the upper left rear, a slight belling of the lower rear board, noticeable scuffing to corners and verticals and some surface wear to raised bands and decoration at the spine, but remains overall sound and attractive, with gilt titles at the spine. 925pp. (+10pp. advertisements, including a pitch to traveling book salesmen); 442 engravings and portraits.; 8vo.
