The textbook of Civil War battles by Col. G. J. Fiebeger, USA, Professor of Engineering at USMA, complete in two volumes; the first book (v, 432pp) contains the text and the second, 46 pages of black and white plates (all line maps) and seven pages of indices. The second volume has a few ink stamps indicating the plate number in color (not consistent), some rippling through most of the pages due to dampness, and some foxing and darker spotting; the boards are stained and warped, the fabric loosened at the top right front corner, the inked titles on the front board flaked, though legible. The first volume is in considerably better condition, the pages crisp and clean except for a prior owner's note on the front endpaper and mild foxing at endpapers and edges; the binding is square and secure, the full cloth hard cover moderately darkened at the spine with some spots of finish loss and some softening and surface wear at both spine ends, and there is a dark smudge at the middle of the rear board; otherwise sound and attractive. Eerie to imagine the author preparing this text in a world already endlessly weary of war but unprepared for the vastness of conflict about to erupt.
