Thoughts Upon Hare and Fox Hunting in a Series of Letters to a Friend, in Which Are Given Ample Directions for Erecting a Kennel, the Management of Hounds, and the Duties and Qualifications Necessary for a Huntsman and Whipper-In

New York: Jonathan Cape and Robert Ballou, 1932. Hardcover. Very Good with no dust jacket / No Dustjacket. Item #073868

Pages clean, many still uncut; gilding along head edge shows two short scratches; the full red cloth is quite faded along the spine and upper front, and corners show mild shelfwear, but the cover is otherwise attractively well-kept, with gilt titles still sharp. The interior flaps from the otherwise absent dustjacket are laid in. 327pp.; 16 color engravings; marbled eps; bound-in ribbon marker. This edition reprinted from that of 1796. A reviewer noted: "Never had fox or hare the honour of being chased to death by so accomplished a hunter: never was a huntsman's dinner graced by such urbanity and wit. He would bag a fox in Greek, find a hare in Latin, inspect his kennels in Italian, and direct the economy of his stables in exquisite French." Even those of us lacking in appreciation for the subject matter in itself can enjoy the 9-page alphabetical list of appropriate names for hounds (divided by sex).
