Taipei: Qi ming shu ju, 1955. Hand Sewn Paper. Very Good. Item #072310
Volumes 13-24 of exemplary stone rubbings taken from famous monuments by Shen Zhifang, edited by Gao Hongjin, with instructions for use in writing practice; each volume has four-hole stab binding and attractively printed covers, and they are gathered between two wooden boards with laces. The pages throughout are modestly age-toned, and the cover of the first volume bears some foxing around the bottom of the title; a laid-in cover slip also shows some dust spotting and a few light, flattened horizontal folds; the pastedown on the wooden front cover has a tear at one corner, causing no text loss though it interrupts the design, while the rear pastedown shows some droplet spots, pale enough not to obscure any text; the laces are discolored where they thread through the boards and starting to fray at the ends, but they remain sturdy. Sheets of clear, archival acetate have been inserted between boards and books to prevent damage. This would make a charming gift for a student of calligraphy or for any sinophile and historian.
