New York: The Century History Company, 1903. Cloth Hardcover. Good / No Dustjacket. Item #072073
Four volume set in green cloth 8vo: Volume I, The Pioneer Period (xxiii, 396pp); II, The Civil War (xviii, 423pp); III, From 1866 to 1903 (xii, 531pp); IV, Iowa Biography (xiv, 325pp). Each volume is free from owners' marks but bears modest foxing at endpapers, on and facing plates, and around the fore- and heel edges; volume four also bears a small, pale scrape in the gilding along the head edge. Each volume has moderately relaxed binding, though all four volumes remain square, and the bindings are secure; the full green cloth shows pale brown spotting at all panels, dimming along each spine, spots of fraying along spine shoulders and at spine ends and free corners, with Volume Two bearing also pale spots, faded spots, and finish loss, and Volume One showing pale spots and streaks on the rear, short and shallow bends at two places on the top rear edge, and a closed tear continuing up as high as the gilt decoration at the spine heel, the gilt titles dimmed from mid-spine down but still bright at the upper spines. One of the seminal works of Iowa history and an often-referenced work in early State Historical Society publications.
