Berlin: Gustav Hempel, 1855. Third Printing. Half-Leather. Good. Item #067894
"Mit einem in Farben gedruckten Titelbild, 5 Karten und 93 Holzschnitten." VIII + 543pp. Pages bear foxing throughout but are free from owners' marks; binding is square and secure, the leather of the spine showing scratches and scuffs along the backstrip, the beginning of a crack at the bottom of the front joint, and additional surface wear along the sides and at the spine ends, with some flaking of the gilt titles and decoration; the corners are worn around the edges; the textured brown boards also show a few chips around outside edges and scattered white specks on the back, otherwise clean and well-kept. Caveat for the modern reader: Only taxonomical names are in a Roman typeface; the rest is in blackletter. A thrilling frontis depicts masted ships struggling for a northern passage amid icebergs; five two-color maps show magnetic fields, oceanic currents, and more; woodcuts illustrate maritime species, river watersheds, and even a scene of spelunking.
