Battle Creek, MI: Cannon & Co., Publishers, 1881. Second Edition. Hardcover. Good. Item #049375
Clean pages except for a prior owner's name on the front endpaper, a few gentle finger marks at the outside edges of the page block, and gentle wrinkles at the free endpapers; the binding is somewhat relaxed, but square and secure. The cloth spine shows rubbing and softening at the ends and a few small moisture spots; the paper boards are age-toned and have a few spots and small surface scuffs, with chipping along the edges and rub-through and inward turns at the free corners; otherwise square, secure, and sound. A strange and informative memory capsule, this book includes sections opposing the American "aristocracy" and favoring international labor movements, explaining the economic hard times in terms of inflation and predatory bank practices, describing the dangers of speculation, and detailing what was and was not as profitable as claimed - apiaries, for example, the authors deemed over-rated, while Iowa farming was a better business than news and rumor implied.
