New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1885. First Edition. Full Leather. Near Fine. Item #039013
Two volumes (published in 1885 and 1886), each with tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait and marbled page block edges, newly rebound in blind-tooled full calf with the original marbled endpapers and spine labels reapplied. The labels bear a little wear - one dark spot on the volume band of the second book, a wandering crack at the right edge of the volume band on the first book, and a few spots of gilt flaking - but remain bright and attractive. The pages of both volumes are clean except for one or two fingerprints in margins per volume; no ownership marks; a little mild toning in the margins, otherwise surprisingly bright; the fold-out reproduced letters in the first volume show tanning at the edges, a short, closed tear along one crease, and extra folding creases in four places, but the fold-out is otherwise intact; the facsimile at p. 497 in the second volume has a closed edge tear but is otherwise excellent, and the extended map at 632 has but one spot of foxing in the margin, otherwise lovely. Illustrated, primarily with maps, throughout both volumes; indexed in the second volume; 584pp. + 647pp.
