Avignon: J. J. Niel, Imprimeur-Librarie, 1787. Half-Leather. Good -. Item #069873
Languages: Latin and French facing-page dual text. Pages escaped owners' marks but bear scattered, mostly pale brown, spotting throughout, some foxing at endpapers and margins, and a small insect bore in the margins at pp. 89-130; another bore at pp. 283-314 has caused the loss of a few letters on each leaf. The binding is modestly relaxed, but secure, the half-leather hard cover showing rub-through at corners and edges, chipping around the edges of the marbled paper on the front board, loss of the marbled covering on the back board, and some scuffing at spine ends, but leather spine remains supple and quite charming, with bright gilt decoration and titles, and of course this was a tremendously influential work in terms of popular history and understanding of leadership that surely shaped the tumultuous years ahead - the Revolution started just two years after this printing. 381pp.
