Meet Us

Welcome to Josh's Room.
A good place to sit while considering Hume's history of England.

The second room downstairs hosts our history sections, as well as some related topics from political science to current events. There is a separate section for political biography, but most historical biographies are in the history sections most nearly related to the subject (i.e., Louis XIV is in French history, and George Washington Carver is in American).

Because we love to keep beautiful books like illustrated guides to Lewis and Clark's travels and useful reference works such as the Durants' history of civilization, we do have special shelves between sections for oversized books. Don't forget to browse!

(Specifically Iowan history is kept upstairs.)

The History Department:
There is a section of General History books at the beginning, including books about international or -continental issues, books about historians or about the philosophy or general nature of history, and books that otherwise don't quite fit into one of the subsequent subsections:

Archaeology

Ancient History from the Maya and Egypt, etc. through Greek and Roman civilisation

Medieval Studies (including sociology, economics and literature as well as history)

Military History with additional sub-sub-sections for the US Civil War, the two World Wars and the Vietnam conflict (both before and during US involvement)

African History and biographies of prominent African figures

Middle Eastern Studies

Asian Studies with three additional sub-sub-sections for China, India and Japan

European History from the Renaissance forward, divided into sections about Russia, Germany, France, England, Scotland, and Ireland (works about other European nations are presently in with the general History at the beginning of this section)

U. S. History, which also includes biographies of American figures, books about American culture and social history, memoirs by prominent citizens, etc.

Political Biography of figures such as Churchill and Mussolini as well as the US Presidents

Related Matters:

Political Science includes Machiavelli and de Tocqueville as well as Marx and Engels, current theory, and political history.

Law hosts both books about legal history and books for law students and practicing lawyers.

Economics

Labor

Business focuses on practical applications for current or future business owners, but also includes commentary on the state of business and finance in the world today.

Current Events

Journalism includes important pieces of that art, such as Herr's Dispatches and books by John Reed, and biographies of key journalists, as well as books on the history of the media and journalistic techniques.

Why is it called Josh's Room?
Among our favourite "ghosts," people who haunt the shop on a regular basis, is a brilliant fellow whose interests include ancient and religious history. A longtime regular, part of one of our first study groups, and a founding member of the Killer Bunny Circle, Josh has also become a dear family friend over the years. And Nierme likes his shoelaces, too.
