Meet Us

Welcome to the Dining Room.
Beware of card games.

The northwest room is furnished with a table and chairs for the use of browsers, study groups, and book clubs, as well as some productions by local artists and an eclectic array of sections. Starting from the north wall:

French Language is divided into novels and theatre, poetry, general nonfiction, and dictionaries; German Language is split up similarly, but also has a separate section of political philosophy (for Marx and Engels in particular).

Russian Language and Spanish Language follow, with works in and dictionaries of more languages (alphabetised by language) in a bookcase of their own.

We endeavour especially to keep a variety of dictionaries, a good selection of materials for Classical scholars, and fiction and poetry in Italian, Japanese and Portuguese, among others.

Gaming is primarily for role-playing games and collectible card games; chess, bridge, etc. are downstairs.

Comics tends to focus on the Marvel and DC classics, though we also include a variety of works by independent and local artists; Graphic Novels has a broad cross-section from current manga to critically acclaimed books like Spiegelman's Maus.

Along the east wall:

Travel begins with a selection of books on aviation, sailing, motor vehicles, and railways and continues with Travelogues, a favourite of ours, and a selection of Travel Guides, followed by several picture books about places around the world.

Collectors' Editions presently includes two sets of the Harvard Classics, several attractive, older Everyman's Library editions, and an enormous selection of Modern Library editions, nearly all in the dust jackets, each dust jacket carefully covered in new, clear, archivally safe sleeves.

Continuing from Leiden's Room:

Vintage Children's Books, including collectible series like the Hardy Boys and Bobbsey Twins but also early printings of L. M. Montgomery's books and illustrated classics and story collections.

Primers and Schoolbooks from the 19th and early 20th centuries cover topics from geography to music, history to literature. We particularly enjoy the Chautauqua books.

By the west window:

Here are a few miscellaneous older books, including some bound volumes of 19th century journals, some unusual sets or attractive older printings of nonfiction works, and some items of historical interest, such as 19th century books about invention and the sciences. We have some postcards, stereoscope cards and photographs dating from the same era.

Scattered along the tops of shelves and on the mantelpiece, you'll find cards, postcards and prints by local artists. [Coming soon: More about our featured artists.]

An early laptop, with case, overhangs our Modern Library selection.
