The room in the southeast corner of the store houses over 6,000 volumes of fiction and literature, from Ed Abbey to Emile Zola, including novels and single-author short story collections. Multi-author anthologies follow, organised alphabetically by editor. We also have a shelf of Large Type books (presently including both fiction and nonfiction). Besides the books, you will also find an Oliver typewriter; a philodendron; an armchair for your use while considering Huxley, Ishiguro, Joyce and company; and (if it's sunny) Nierme, one of our cats. She's fond of the south window. Why is it called Claire's Room? Claire is the name given to our "ghost," in certain stories about unusual things that have happened here. It is certainly true that our fiction collection holds the "spirit" of the Haunted Bookshop, in that we love to introduce readers and stories to each other. In this room, you'll find paperback classics as well as collectors' editions, a sampling of our favourite recent novels (many of which are signed), and some things you might not find very often, like fiction published by the Toothpaste Press or lesser-known works by Mikhail Bulgakov. Not sure what to pick? Let us know what you like, and we'll show you some other things you might enjoy. Or, check inside one of your favourite books to see if someone has left a Ghostnote recommending some of their other favourites. |
